Quirky Observations on Air Travel

Musings after taking a trip from DC to JFK to Kuwait and back in the same route:

  • ….If you are brown skinned, be prepared to see SSSS on your boarding card. Someone joked that it means “SSSSCREWED!”, but quite literally means Special Security Screening Service. Not once, not twice, but I went through it the entire itineary at every single stop! I didnt mind it, but couldnt help notice the irony and the discrimination. Why only dark skinned or foreigners are pulled aside? To all dark skinned people – allow yourself extra time at the airports.
  • <li>....Indians should have special travel restrictions, especially weight. For some goddamned reasons, Indians love to travel heavy! And really heavy! And they are quite un-apologetic about it too on the plane when they dont find enough overhead space to stow their luggage! God bless the planes which actually carry the weight!</li>

<li>....You can take Indian out of India, but you cannot take Indian out of Indian in an Air line. Even having lived a considerable time in the states, they can't pick up basic civic sense on how to be on an aircraft! Its not a flight, its a literal mela in the air. And I ain't talking about Air India Yet.</li>

<li>....There is always one nincompoop on the plane who wants to use the restroom just when the plane is about to hit the runway. It is only through god's mercy and hostess's training that the poor sod is returned back to safety.</li>

<li>....American Airlines is the worst possible airlines. I had to wait 10 hours at JFK to travel, guess what, 55 minutes of flight from JFK to DC. I could have walked instead!</li>

<li>....Gujjus can be hilarious on long journey plane rides. </li>

<li>....Half the people on the plane assume that the host or hostess is quite literally their servant.</li>

<li>....Kuwait airways has one of the most laziest onground staff. I was told there are no window seats available in my class, though in the plane, there were more than 5 avaiable for anyone to sit.</li>

I am sure there are more… will add more as I remember them!

    I’m Back!

… From a well deserved vacation. Have lots to write about… though a wee bit drained out at the moment. Should be able to write soon 🙂

    Improving Computer Performance 2

    Improving Computer Performance.

Frankly speaking, I have couple of reviews to post, but I am bored to finish them and put them on the web.  This topic caught my eye while I was doing ‘general surfing’ on MS. I looked at the reviews and me thought – why don’t I give some free advice to all my net savvy friends here on MS! Brilliant idea, isn’t it? Get ready to tortured for another 5000 characters of the review. However if you finish reading this, chances are you will be as smart as me!!!

    Ram Ram, RAM, Kaisen Ho?

The only thing on your computer which can significantly improve your system performance is the RAM. If you think your computer is too slow, a fast CPU is not going to help you much, but a good dose of additional RAM will. Why? RAM happens to be the fastest memory residing on your PC, and it stores all the most commonly used pointers to programs, ensuring speedy access to all your programs. So if you are still stuck in a moment with 128 Mb, then its time to move to 256 Mb. For windows XP, 512 seems a safer option to upgrade. Only, don’t upgrade blindly – check first whether the mother of the PC (mother-board for the novice) approves any additional children on itself. If she gives the go-ahead, the first thing to do is this!

    Boot the booty first!

One of the ways to improve your system performance is to make your boot partition smaller than the rest. When your system boots, imagine the system having to  scan through a huge partition and initialize your drive. The boot drive (usually the C:\ drive, can change if you have multiple OS running) should not be more than 3 Gb. The boot drive is the drive which has your Operating system installed and hence its called boot drive simply it stores the booty! By ensuring the booty to be small, you ensure that your system boots the booty the faster and ready to use.

    Operating systems like windows XP.

    Welcome

This from now on, I hope is my new blog space. As I add more and move my blog from blogger to here, please, await a while.

Thank you, god bless, and good luck!! (Aw, I sound so corny!)

    I’ll Finish Him….!

So today I called up this desi travel agent – I have been calling them all over to get the tickets; anyhow a very sweet lady picked up the phone and this is how it went…

Me: …Can you give me the fare details?

Her: Can I have your name please?

Me: Suyog; S as in Sam, U as in Umbrella, Y as in umm..err.. Yak, (excuse me sir?) Y as in Why!, O as in Ostrich, G as in God.

Her: And your phone number sir?

    Me: 4-4-3–5-6-2–5-1-0-1

Her: Suyog, I am currently with another customer here; Can I please call you back in 5-10 minutes? I will finish him and get to you…

I almost wanted to say err.. miss dracula… I am not in a hurry. I ended up meekly saying – “of course, I would reaaaaaaaalllly appreciate it”.

Sigh, the desi travel agents 😉

    Another number game.

I promise this is the last :D… for a while.

OK, I have achieved my objectives and more 🙂

I am now 48 pounds lesser and 4 inches off my waist – a cool 32″ waist hehheh – still got some fat around, eh, but who caressssssssssssss!!!! I never aimed for a flat stomach anyways hehehe!

I am on top of the world now 🙂 – didnt know weight loss was not only easy, but enjoyable!

    Tada!!!!!

    Mummy ko nahi hai pata!

Now this is one atrocious song I have been hearing since the last few days fromt the movie Chocolate. The lyrics borderline senselessness, and I can’t help but go into fits of laughter when hear Sunidhi Chauhan croon:

Kehte hain sabhi ke badhi HOTTTH hoo main…
Tequila ka ek SHOTTH hoon main…
Kehte hain sabhi ke badhi HOTTTH hoo main…
Tequila ka ek SHOTTH hoon main…

    Magar Khayaaaal yeh rahe Zaraaaaaaaa-aa…

    Mummy ko nahi hai pata!!!!
    Mummy ko nahi hai pata!!!!
So – Mummy ko na kehnaaaaaaaaaaa!!

    Ye! Way to go Sunidhi!

    The Da Vinci Code

Writing a fiction novel based on history is a very tough act and very few authors have ever managed to blend the two of them beautifully. The rich European history provides the perfect backdrop for many authors to create a story based on the history. Especially the first millennia and till the middle of second millennia Europe’s history has been largely chaotic, wild and one with lots of either glorious or shameful acts in history. One such began at the beginning of the millennia. Jesus Christ lived a life of an ordinary man but had the vision of an extraordinary man. He lived like man, inspired millions to follow him in his faith. However after his death, it took another three centuries for Christianity to develop in the world. The person who gave the right birth to Christianity was Constantine, a wily ruler of Rome who gave rise to the first Vatican Church.

To spread the message of Christ, Vatican needed  to display Christ as a God; A divine form of human who came to inspire us. Vatican needed to market Christ as someone made from heavens to save them. The spellbinding success of the Vatican saw to that Christ became the holy God – the only God. The new testament was introduced too to propagate Christianity. Countless accounts of Vatican’s hatred towards Women in early millennia are visible today in the stories of Joan of Arc.; which was itself a ploy by the Vatican to suppress Pagan worship and beliefs. However, Christianity through its smart propaganda policies survived everything to become one of the foremost religion in the world.

What if a book comes along and gives you an entirely different perspective to the whole origin of the Church?  The Bible? The New Testament? What if an author decides to blend the alternate theories around Christ with modern day suspense and drama and writes a fiction? What if that fiction is so too real that you start wondering where boundaries of fiction end and fact begins?

You get ‘The da vinci Code’ – An incredible new thriller from a relatively new author – Dan Brown.

    O, Draconian Devil

    Oh, Lame Saint

    da vinci Code

Can you solve the riddle above? If not read on –

As the name itself suggests the book has a lot to with Leonardo da vinci and Codes. A symbologist Robert Langdon is on a trip to Paris where is to give lectures. His specialty is studying history of the world and he is pretty good at it. He is supposed to meet the curator Jacques Sauniere of the world famous museum Louvre to discuss about something. However Robert Langdon gets a late night call by the police and is summoned to Louvre, only to find the curator dead.

The curator before dying, left upon a riddle (the one above), shredded of his clothes and positioned himself in the famous Vitruvian position – a painting drawn by Da  Vinci describing the perfect male. In addition he has a pentacle on his navel, suggesting a deep meaning to Robert Langdon. Enter Sophie Nevau, the curator’s grand-daughter who works with the cryptology department who comes upon the scene to save Robert who is believed to be a conspirator in Curator’s  murder.

What Robert Finds out is shocking. Jacques Sauniere the curator was a member of the Priory of Sion, one of the oldest cults in the world, whose origins began right from the death of Christ. The Priory of Sion was once headed by da vinci, Newton, Victor Hugo and such important people in history. From then on begins the wild chase of Sophie and Robert to break the code only to be led to another. One puzzle to another, one clue to another, Sophie and Robert must break every cipher possible to not only save their lives, but something even more important than all this – The Secret.

    Don Brown’s Code

Writing such a brilliant book is supremely difficult. Brown’s hard research shows in every page of this book. Right from the brilliant pieces of information that flow as a monologue of Robert / Sophie recalling their lives, the history of Christ that has been intertwined is simply brilliant to say the least. da vinci was a character by himself, but to understand his brilliant paintings and mind took some patience; The book explains many of Da Vinci’s paintings like Madonna of the Rocks, The Monalisa, The Last Supper and the rest; and get ready to get shocked.  Add with it, he infuses the Priory of Sion and the controversial prelature to church – Opus Dei (which was in controversy due to their recruiting methods) to create a real page turner.

Several times in the book, I had to stop reading because of the shock and awe value the author offers in terms of information. Several times I had to bring up internet to see what the author writes is true or not. Several times I had to stop and think and amuse myself. However Brown has also written a controversial book. Hardcore religious fanatics are already calling for a ban on this incredible book – lets hope it doesn’t get banned. The story moves at breakneck speed and never once leaves the reader un-hooked. Its very rarely that books keep me glued as much as this did. The codes and riddles (like  one above) make the book even more interesting!

    Don Brown’s Book

However, the book does come with its small but noticeable share of flaw. Like all modern authors of today’s world have succumbed to writing books for movies, this one too follows the suit. Of course its spellbinding, but one cant help feeling the feeling of watching a movie while reading the book. The codes and puzzles are broken in a short period of time by two brilliant lead characters also seem a little out of the way – but I can assure you, you will not even think of it while reading the book. Its that gripping.

On the other hand, it must be also noted that writing this book must be difficult. What the author presents is what a certain section of historians believe it is true. For us, we need to think wisely and choose. I must say the theories are pretty convincing and given Vatican’s violent and hopelessly political  past, the theories may be true as well. After doing research on the internet, its indeed possible that if not all, several theories around Christ may be true after all.

Overall this is simply a brilliant book. For all those who love history and like information in form of fiction, this is simply a MUST-READ! For every person who wants to know about the history of Priory of Sion and its long standing mission with Vatican, you need to pick this book up. For everyone who loves cryptic puzzles and edge of the seat thriller, then too you must pick this up!

    Da Suyog Code

The riddle above is the first riddle in the book. I have not included the complete riddle too – but this is the first riddle that sets the book in motion. Did you break it while you read my review? Its all too apparent if you read my review closely.

Let me give you a hint – it’s an Anagram. If you break it, let me know in my comments. If you cannot, what are you doing reading till here – Grab the book!

All our young lives we search for someone to love. Someone who makes us complete. We choose partners and change partners. We dance to a song of heartbreak and hope…. all the while wondering, if somewhere, somehow, there’s someone perfect… who might be searching for us.

    ;-).

    40 and >3

By now everyone knows what it means. But I will gloat about it anyways – Yes, I am down by 40 pounds and more than 3 inches of my waist!

Ye! Ye! I feel happier 🙂
