Amar Singh Chamkila, 2024 – ★★★★½

What a devastatingly beautiful biopic of Chamkila. Imtiaz Ali is in top form here supported an excellent soundtrack as well terrific performances across the board. Probably one of the finest biopics out of India this! This is how you do Biopics, Bollywood!

Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, 2003 – ★★★★½

Rewatched this movie again last night after almost 2 decades and it remains one of the seminal movies of Bollywood. It amazes me how relevant the movie is even today in spite of being set in 1970s India. The only difference? A brave movie like this would never ever get made in today’s India and politics.

12th Fail, 2023 – ★★★½

I probably would have loved this movie more had we not see The Aspirants TV show on prime (or Kota Factory). Some of the scenes were literally derivatives of same scenes in The Aspirants. Still a great effort.

Desis

On our masala mailing list, I see this today:

Hi Friends,

I am positing for a friend who joined our team recently.

He is looking for a accmodation near *****. South Indians preferable.

Thanks

Does this desi realize that this post reeks of racism?

South Indians preferable? Gimme a break!

Mimoh

Here’s what our so called film expert Taran Adarsh has to say on Mimoh Chakraborthy:

“All eyes are on Mimoh and right so. The youngster needs to take care of his styling and makeup, but let’s give him the due — he has the potential. Only thing, he needs a better vehicle to drive into the audience’s heart. His expressions are okay, his dialogue delivery can be brushed up, he needs to lose weight. “

Yes, he has potential I agree…

Hmmmm

Somebody I know really needs to lose its weight quickly. Things have come so far now that I dont even realize whether its a he or a she.

Today it was panting for breath – that too for just standing for 5 minutes. At some point I was confused and nearly believed it was feeling a heart attac k! It clearly needs some rest – perhaps needs to go into hibernation!!

Corporate Emails

Now I am not an English grammar expert nor am I trying to condone anybody here. But somehow, these are some traits I only see in desi written emails (corporate). I am not saying ONLY desis write such, but I’ve seen an awful lot many to write this post.

“Hi All”, “Hello All”

I don’t know why people find it necessary to say “Hi” to “All” if they have sent an email to several people. I don’t know – “Hi All” just doesn’t sound right to me. I would rather say “All”, or simply start the email without saying Hi-Hellos to anybody. Why not say “Hello everyone/everybody” ? (Dunno if thats right either, but it sounds better to me!)

“Thanks and regards”

Again, thanks OR regards in most cases suffices in a corporate email. I am not sure why thanks and regards are used together. Sometimes I have seen them being used as two lines:

Regards,
Thanks,
XXX

Again, why the need to have regards and thanks on two different lines still baffles me.

“Please help in this regard”

This is a classic desi tendency to end emails after writing a long email about issues affecting them. The problem seems that one is asking “help” only in this issue and nothing else. Often times I believe this is because one thinks in their native language and translates it into English.

Think of any more such things? Let me know!!
